This Week In ‘What Now’

A reminder of what we featured in our new premium newsletter this week.

Sam Grasso

Many things happened this week, but it seems fair to say that none of them was as important as the launch of What Now, Discourse Blog’s new premium newsletter.

Just to remind you: What Now comes out Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and contains 100 percent original content, including interviews, reader Q&As, and behind-the-scenes features. And, starting today, What Now is the exclusive home of Rafi Schwartz’s beloved news roundup, Man, What the Hell?

What Now will normally only be available to members of our Steward tier, but this week, we wanted all our readers to have a taste of what they could expect, so we took down the paywall and gave everyone a free preview. In case you missed it, though, here’s a sneak peek at the week in What Now. If you like what you see, please subscribe to our Steward tier!

OK, let’s get to it.

In Monday’s edition, Jack Crosbie interviewed Jared Holt, an expert on far right movements, about the attack on the Capitol and what it means for the future:

What are you seeing from these same communities as far as inauguration and events in the rest of January?

What we’re watching really closely is  going back to late November, early December, nationwide armed protests at every state Capitol and in DC [are] being planned for January 17th. That was being put together by these guys who run a Boogaloo movement blog. And in the last week or so, especially since what happened in the Capitol, that is getting a fair amount of traction in militia movement groups. We’re not quite yet seeing the same logistical discussions that we saw ahead of January 6th. The inauguration is the next big target date, but we don’t have any like hard intelligence of specific plans for violent action on that day. But there’s still time.

In Wednesday’s edition, we kicked off our reader mailbag series, also known as the Group Chat. Cros answered a wide variety of reader questions on everything from his experiences in war zones to, well, other topics:

James asks: What Mario Kart character would each member of the Trump family pick?

Ok I don’t really have time to do a full explanation of my reasoning on all of these so without further ado:

Trump: DK
Melania: Rosalina
Ivanka: Peach
Eric: Lakitu
Don Jr. Iggy
Tiffany: Toadette
Barron: Luigi (tall)
Jared: Only plays with his Mii, which looks exactly like him

And in Friday’s edition, we marked the official migration of Man, What the Hell? from our website to our newsletter, complete with its very own, deeply stressed-out bird:

Rafi tackled the week’s weirdo news with his usual aplomb. For example:

I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you ban me?

Here are just a few of the chuckleheads who took Twitter’s recent QANON/Nazi/Alt-Right/Whatever house cleaning as an invitation to show their whole entire ass:

Bari Weiss
Prager U
Michael Tracey
Brian Kilmeade
Matt Gaetz
Kirstie Alley
Sarah Huckabee Sanders
James Woods
Kevin Sorbo

Thanks for making this easy, guys!

Next week, our very own Paul Blest will be taking the reins! Again, take a stroll through this week’s editions, and if you want more, head over to and join our Steward tier!

Happy Friday!
