Anthony's song was a classic "Had me in the first half" piece of media. The relatable portion gives way to talking about welfare queens and Epstein's island and you could already see where the discourse was going to go. Add on that terrible Aldean song being in the news only a few weeks earlier and you just knew conservatives were salivating at having TWO songs at the top of music discourse.
I'm happy the dude spoke up about his song being used by people he equally despised, but overall that song sucked so hopefully it'll be quickly be left in the dustbin of history.
Absolutely. The rich ruling class of politicians suck? Right on man. America’s problems are caused by fat people on welfare? Slow down there ghost of Reagan.
The Oliver Anthony backlash is amazing. "I am a human being who has complex and nuanced beliefs, not all of which may match yours" is such a delicious point of contention which is also obvious enough that it makes everyone who doesn't like it show their collective ass.
Joe the Plumber was an early example of 'going viral' - and I do remember him, and how that whole 'gee shucks' bit was bullshit from the start. But remember Ken Bone from the 2016 debate? The media (or the social media) pick up on someone, turn them into something they're not, then get all bent out of shape when that persona fails to live up to the constructed image. Conservatives (particularly around Oliver Anthony) are actively SEARCHING for these people to use, it seems. I think its a reflection on how unpopular and unlikeable someone who truly represents the GOP faithful winds up being to the rest of us. Thankfully, there are ways to get out from under it, like Oliver did, but there are also the pick-me types like Pearl Davis who actively seek that grift because it gets them a sudden paycheck.
"Anthony has peppered his music and social media with all sorts of right-wing conspiracy-mongering about stuff like who really did 9/11" LOL I'm pretty sure there are about a zillion actual leftists interested in the answer to that question.
You are right up there with NPR who called Epstein's island a conspiracy theory in their article about Oliver Anthony's song.
It eluded him in life because he wasn't a real plumber, but now, ol' Joe is finally gonna Rest In Piss.

Joe the Plumber dying with an open GoFundMe for his healthcare expenses is one of those moments that reminds me why I'm agnostic, not a full atheist.

I compared/contrasted Oliver's song to the other summer country hit "Try That In A Small Town" here: https://open.substack.com/pub/went2thebridge/p/rich-men-north-of-richmond-vs-try?r=3alev&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Labels!
Who needs em😝😝😝
People are so much more complicated and diverse than a label.
Don't you think.
The conservative totem is the guy in the pickup truck who loves Jesus as much as he loves free market capitalism and hates ethnics
"What did you do with your Bush rebate check?"
"Duh. I invested in infrastructure. And these badassed window decals. See, Calvin is actually PEEING on a Ford logo!"
