I’ve decided going forward to talk about each BotW in terms of its counterpart in the hit board game Wingspan.
Hooded Merganser is a great early-game card if you can manage to pair it with something like a Golden Eagle or a Peregrine Falcon, since it will let you repeat the other bird’s power a second time. Past the second round it’s probably only worth playing if it helps you achieve some kind of bonus
